What’s Next for Books & Mortar?

Shortly after announcing we’ll be opening Books & Mortar, in Grand Rapids, MI, we received a flurry of emails and messages. We loved hearing from the community and since you had so many questions about what’s next for us in the coming months we thought it would be helpful to share with our followers what’s next for Books & Mortar as we move toward opening the store.

Signing a Lease

As you may have heard, we are currently in the middle of lease negotiations which means we are unable to share our store location at this time. As soon as we sign on the dotted line (hopefully soon!) you will be the first to know where we’ll set up shop. We have a feeling you won’t be disappointed.

Announcing our Coffee Friends

Since the inception of Books & Mortar we hoped to partner with some very special local coffee people and we are pleased to say our hopes have become a reality. As soon as they are ready, we’ll announce which local coffee people will open a location in our store. Again, we have a feeling you won’t be disappointed.

Assembling an Events Calendar

As we make connections in the Grand Rapids community we will begin to assemble an events calendar for our first year in business. We hope to have a robust schedule of author readings, book groups, community forums, Q&A panels, storytimes and other engaging community-minded events. If you have an idea for an event and it accomplishes our mission, please feel free to email us and tell us more! info@booksandmortar.com

Selecting an Initial Inventory

Every independent bookstore begins with their best guess when selecting their initial inventory, hoping it will match the interests of the neighborhood and generate sales. We already have thousands of used books in storage and soon we will open accounts with publishers and select thousands of new titles for our opening. Eventually our inventory will be influenced by our customer’s purchasing habits and requests, creating a bookstore that truly reflects the community. This is one of the attributes of indie bookstores that make them so special; over time they can so beautifully reflect the neighborhoods and people of their city.

On top of selling books and traditional sideline items like journals, greeting cards, and games, we will sell hand-crafted products made by artists from Grand Rapids and the Great Lakes region. From paper goods to candles and soaps, we are opening accounts with local artists to bring you a well curated selection of items that will support local companies and enhance your book buying experience.

Moving to Grand Rapids

We plan to move to Grand Rapids on June 1. We will say goodbye to Chicago and thank its people for a fantastic five years, and look forward to a bright future in Grand Rapids’ indie retail scene.

Completing the Build-out

Shortly after settling in, we plan to begin our store build-out which we anticipate will last about two months. This is when some of you can really start geeking-out about the new indie bookstore opening in your neighborhood.

Soft Opening

Here is the exciting stuff! We intend to have a soft opening sometime in August, so you can stop in and purchase a cup of coffee, a book or a gift and extend ample amounts of grace to your friendly booksellers as we figure out how to steer this ship. No more waiting, no more wondering about our location and no more Grand Rapids without a community-minded independent bookstore in the downtown area. When we open our doors to the public later this year, we’ll be excited to finally meet you.

Thanks again and again, Grand Rapids, for your continued support as we set sail on this wild adventure in indie bookselling.

Owners of Books & Mortar, Chris Roe and Jonathan Shotwell

If you’re reading this blog post, it’s likely you have heard there’s a new independent bookstore and coffee bar opening in Grand Rapids, MI.  We hope you’re as thrilled about this as we are, and we are eager to meet you when we open our doors to the public later this year.

Who are we?

We are Chris Roe and Jonathan Shotwell, booksellers and proud owners of Grand Rapids’ soon-to-be newest independent bookstore, Books & Mortar.  We are Michigan natives who ventured to Chicago for graduate school in 2011 and have been living here ever since.  Chris is a classically trained pianist, an organist, an elementary educator, a fitness enthusiast, and most recently an ordained minister of the American Baptist Churches (USA).  Jonathan is an urbanite and an outdoorsman, a youth program specialist, has an M.Div. and believed Santa Claus was a real person until the 5th grade.  We are both very interested in urban development and strongly committed to encouraging healthy communities through any means available to us.  Opening a community-minded independent bookstore has been a long-time dream for us and this project is our way of encouraging healthy community at this time and in this place.

Why open a bookstore now?

If you are a book lover, you know how vital neighborhoods can be when their retail corridors include an indie bookstore.  In the mid-to-late 1980s a surge of new independent bookstores opened across the country, creating a community of retailers who were dedicated to the vitality of their communities and champions for the written word in printed form.  Many of those bookstores suffered and even closed their doors when most Americans shifted their focus from local, independently run retail to big box stores and online shopping.  Undoubtedly you have heard the media predict the death of the book due to the advent of e-readers or the end of the local independent bookstore due to Barnes & Noble and Amazon.  That narrative is waning as more and more Americans understand the economic impact on their local communities when they decide to buy local.  This narrative of buying local has become the new normal for many urban dwellers across the United States, bringing new life to urban neighborhoods and fertile economic soil to plant new indie bookstores.  According to the American Bookseller’s Association, 60 new bookstores opened in 2015 and while bookstores continue to close, more are opening than closing. The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post and other media outlets such as The Week, The Economist, NPR Books, and slate.com are reporting on the resurgence of new independent bookstore openings across the country, much to the delight of book lovers and community-minded citizens.

We believe every great city needs great independent bookstores that reflect its people, its pride, its passions and its challenges.  A place where people can gather for conversation, debate and leisure.  A place where they can find a book that might change their lives.  This is exactly what we want to be a part of in Grand Rapids, MI.

Why in Grand Rapids?

We chose to open a bookstore in Grand Rapids, most importantly, because Grand Rapidians support local businesses.   Grand Rapids’ vibrant business districts are present and thriving because residents have a strong support-local ethic.   If you know anything about Grand Rapids, it’s not surprising that the city has recently risen to the top of many lists for its healthy economy, real-estate market, and people.  Time and time again Grand Rapidians sense of local pride is encouraged as they are nationally recognized for being a great place to live, work and play.  This, however, does not sway residents to resign to their greatness, because they understand there is always more work to be done.  City leaders and residents continue to work together toward common goals to improve the quality of life for every person who lives in Grand Rapids. This kind of deep civic engagement is at the core of what makes Grand Rapids so great and exactly why we believe Books & Mortar will thrive in this wonderful city.

Our Mission

The mission of Books & Mortar is to be a community-minded independent bookstore that enhances the quality of life for the people of Grand Rapids, MI through promoting a literacy culture, curating a socially conscious book selection, providing community space for open dialogue, offering retail space for local artists and affirming the freedom of speech.

We are passionate about books, Grand Rapids and its people and we cannot wait to learn about your passions and interests.  We invite you to join us on this journey as we pack up and say goodbye to Chicago and hello to a future of meaningful retail work in one of the greatest cities in the world.

Jon & Chris
